Eid al-Adha, commonly known as Bakrid or Bakra Eid in India, is one of the two major Islamic festivals. It commemorates the profound story of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in complete obedience to Allah. According to Islamic tradition, when Ibrahim demonstrated his unwavering faith and willingness to obey God's command, Allah provided a ram as a substitute for his son. The festival therefore represents faith, devotion, obedience, sacrifice and trust in God. Muslims begin the day with a special Eid prayer, usually held in mosques and large open prayer grounds. Families dress in new or traditional clothes, greet one another with "Eid Mubarak" and share festive meals. One of the central practices is Qurbani (Udhiyah), the ritual sacrifice of an eligible animal such as a goat, sheep, cattle or camel. The meat is traditionally divided among the family, relatives and people in need, emphasizing generosity and community welfare. Eid al-Adha also coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, making it especially significant for Muslims worldwide.
