Barot Valley

Barot Valley, on the Uhl river in Mandi district, remains one of Himachal's genuinely lesser-visited destinations, its trout hatchery, forested walking trails and quiet village life giving it a character closer to Tirthan than to the busier tourist circuits further west. A historic hydroelectric project dating to the British era adds an unusual industrial heritage layer to the valley's otherwise entirely natural and agricultural appeal.

Fishing permits are available for those wanting to try for trout in the river, and the valley's relative obscurity, even by Himachal's standards for offbeat destinations, means visitors typically encounter very few other travellers throughout a stay.

The Shanan Hydel Project, built by the British in the early 20th century, remains operational in the valley and stands as one of the oldest hydroelectric facilities in the region, adding a layer of industrial history to Barot's otherwise rural character.
