Manali, at the head of the Kullu Valley, is Himachal Pradesh's best-known mountain town, a base for both relaxed valley tourism and more serious adventure travel into the high Himalaya beyond. Old Manali's narrow lanes, cafes and guesthouses retain a laid-back backpacker character distinct from the busier, more commercial main town, and the surrounding valley offers everything from short apple-orchard walks to serious trekking and mountaineering expeditions.
As the gateway to Rohtang Pass, Solang Valley and the wider Lahaul-Spiti region, Manali functions as much as a logistics hub for onward Himalayan travel as a destination in its own right, its infrastructure and range of accommodation making it the natural staging point for exploring much of Himachal's high-altitude terrain.
Manali's growth from a small agricultural village into Himachal's most prominent tourist town accelerated significantly from the 1980s onward, as improved road access and the region's adventure tourism potential drew growing numbers of domestic and international visitors.
March to June, and September to November; a snow-covered December-February draws winter sports visitors to nearby Solang.
Bhuntar airport (Kullu) is about 50km away; Manali is roughly 8-9 hours by road from Chandigarh.
