Divar Island, reached by a short free ferry ride across the Mandovi river from Old Goa, offers a genuinely quiet, rural slice of Goa largely untouched by the state's beach tourism. Paddy fields, old Portuguese-era mansions and small village churches give the island a slower, more traditional character, closer to how much of Goa would have looked before large-scale tourism development.
Cycling around the island is a popular way to explore, and the annual Bonderam festival each August, featuring colourful flag-themed parades tied to historical land disputes, is one of Goa's more distinctive local celebrations, worth timing a visit around if possible.
Divar's relative isolation, requiring a ferry crossing rather than a road bridge for much of its history, has helped preserve its rural character and the strong Portuguese-era Catholic heritage still visible in its churches and old family homes.
