Keoladeo National Park, popularly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland renowned as one of the world's most important bird habitats, historically hosting the critically endangered Siberian crane among hundreds of other resident and migratory species. Originally developed as a royal duck-hunting reserve, the site's wetlands were later fully protected, and today cycle rickshaws and walking paths allow visitors to explore the park's marshes at a pace suited to careful birdwatching.
The sheer density and diversity of birdlife visible within a relatively compact area has made Keoladeo one of the most consistently rewarding birdwatching destinations in Asia, drawing dedicated ornithologists alongside more general wildlife visitors throughout the cooler months.
The area was originally a natural depression that was transformed into a wetland by the Maharaja of Bharatpur through the construction of embankments and water-management structures. The resulting wetland became an important hunting ground for the Bharatpur royal family, particularly for waterfowl.
After India's independence, the area gradually shifted from a hunting reserve to a protected wildlife habitat. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1956, designated a national park in 1982, and recognised as a Ramsar Wetland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Keoladeo is considered one of the world's significant bird habitats.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Jaipur International Airport, approximately 180–190 km from Bharatpur. Agra Airport is another option and is roughly 55–60 km away.
By Train: Bharatpur Junction is the nearest railway station, approximately 5–6 km from the national park. It has rail connections with Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and other major cities.
By Road: Bharatpur is well connected by road with Agra, Delhi, Jaipur and Mathura. Buses, taxis and private vehicles are readily available. The sanctuary is located close to the city and can be reached easily by local transport.
