Agra Fort is a magnificent historic fort located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, near the banks of the Yamuna River. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort is one of the finest examples of Mughal military architecture and served as the main residence of Mughal emperors for several generations. Built with red sandstone and featuring grand palaces, mosques, audience halls, and courtyards, Agra Fort reflects the power, wealth, and architectural achievements of the Mughal Empire. The fort is closely associated with rulers such as Akbar, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb and remains one of India's most important historical monuments.
The origins of Agra Fort date back to ancient times, but the present structure was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar beginning in 1565 CE. Akbar transformed the earlier brick fort into a massive red sandstone fortress, making it the centre of Mughal administration and power. The construction was completed around 1573 CE, with thousands of craftsmen contributing to its design. Later Mughal rulers, especially Shah Jahan, added elegant marble structures inside the fort, including the Moti Masjid, Diwan-i-Khas, Musamman Burj, and Khas Mahal. The fort witnessed several important historical events, including Shah Jahan's final years when he was imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb, during which he is believed to have spent his last days viewing the Taj Mahal from the fort. After the decline of Mughal power, the fort came under the control of various rulers, including the Marathas and the British. Today, Agra Fort stands as a remarkable symbol of Mughal grandeur and India's rich architectural heritage.
