Bikaner, in the Thar Desert's northern reaches, is known for the imposing Junagarh Fort, notable for having never been conquered despite the region's turbulent history, and for the nearby Karni Mata Temple, famous internationally for its resident population of thousands of sacred rats considered reincarnated devotees. The city's old quarter retains elaborately carved red sandstone havelis reflecting historic merchant wealth from trade routes crossing the desert.
Bikaner's distinctive local cuisine, particularly its bhujia snack food, has become nationally recognised, and the city's slightly less-visited status compared to Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur gives it a more authentic, less touristy atmosphere for visitors willing to venture into this northern corner of the Rajasthani desert.
Bikaner was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, the son of Rao Jodha, founder of Jodhpur. Rao Bika established his kingdom in the desert region of northern Rajasthan, and the settlement gradually developed into an important centre along historic trade routes across the Thar Desert.
The city flourished under successive Rathore rulers, who developed its forts, palaces, temples and merchant residences. Junagarh Fort, constructed during the reign of Raja Rai Singh in the late 16th century, became the principal royal stronghold. Bikaner later maintained relations with the Mughal Empire and the British, while retaining its distinctive Rajput identity and cultural traditions.
