Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most magnificent and well-preserved forts in India, rising dramatically above the historic city of Jodhpur. Built on a rocky hill, the fort is renowned for its massive sandstone walls, imposing gateways, ornate palaces, courtyards and extensive collections of royal artefacts. Its elevated position also offers spectacular views of Jodhpur, including the famous blue-painted houses of the old city.

The fort is an important symbol of the Rathore dynasty and the royal heritage of Marwar. Visitors can explore grand interiors such as the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesha Mahal, along with galleries displaying royal weapons, textiles, paintings, palanquins and other historic objects.

Mehrangarh Fort was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur and a member of the Rathore dynasty. Rao Jodha shifted his capital from Mandore to the newly established city of Jodhpur and began constructing the fort on a strategically located rocky hill known as Bhakurcheeria.

The fort was expanded and strengthened by successive rulers of Marwar over several centuries. Its massive walls, some rising more than 30 metres in places, helped protect the kingdom from military attacks. The fort's palaces and decorative interiors were also developed during the reigns of later Rathore rulers, reflecting the changing architectural and artistic traditions of the region. Today, Mehrangarh stands as one of Rajasthan's most significant examples of royal military architecture and heritage.
