Pushkar

Pushkar, built around a sacred lake believed to have been created by a lotus flower dropped by Brahma, is home to one of the very few temples in India dedicated to Brahma the creator, making it a uniquely significant pilgrimage site within a religious tradition where Brahma worship is otherwise rare. The town's 52 bathing ghats around the lake draw pilgrims for ritual bathing, while its bazaars have separately made Pushkar a significant backpacker and spiritual-tourism hub.

The annual Pushkar Camel Fair each November transforms the town dramatically, combining religious pilgrimage with one of the world's largest camel and livestock trading events, alongside cultural performances and a temporary tent city that draws visitors from across India and internationally.

Pushkar has a long history rooted in Hindu mythology and pilgrimage traditions. According to legend, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower at the site, creating the sacred Pushkar Lake. The town subsequently developed as an important pilgrimage centre, with numerous temples and bathing ghats built around the lake.

Pushkar's religious importance continued through different periods of Indian history, although many of its temples were damaged or rebuilt over the centuries. The town was also influenced by the Rajput rulers and later the colonial period. Today, Pushkar remains an important pilgrimage destination and is especially lively during the annual Pushkar Fair and Kartik Purnima celebrations.

By Air: The nearest airport is Kishangarh Airport, around 40–45 km from Pushkar. Jaipur International Airport, approximately 145 km away, offers a wider range of flights.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Ajmer Junction, about 15 km from Pushkar. Ajmer has frequent rail connections with Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and other major cities.

By Road: Pushkar is easily accessible from Ajmer and other Rajasthan cities by road. Regular buses, taxis and private vehicles are available, with the journey from Ajmer generally taking around 30–45 minutes.
