Brihadeeswara Temple

Brihadeeswara Temple, in Thanjavur, is one of the greatest surviving achievements of Chola-era architecture, its 66-metre granite vimana (temple tower) among the tallest of its kind in the world, topped by a single 80-tonne capstone whose transport and placement remains an impressive feat of medieval engineering. Built entirely without mortar, using precisely interlocking stone blocks, the temple's construction reflects an extraordinary level of architectural and engineering sophistication for its 11th-century origin.

As part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Great Living Chola Temples' listing alongside two related temples elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, Brihadeeswara remains an active place of worship, its scale and continued religious function giving visitors a chance to experience genuinely monumental medieval architecture as a living rather than purely historical space.

Built by Chola emperor Rajaraja I and completed around 1010 CE, Brihadeeswara Temple represented the pinnacle of Chola architectural and political ambition, its scale intended to project the empire's power and wealth at the height of Chola dominance over South India.
