Kumbakonam, on the fertile Kaveri delta, is known for an exceptional concentration of ancient temples, its Mahamaham tank and associated temple complex hosting a major festival once every twelve years believed to combine the sanctity of all of India's most significant sacred rivers on that single occasion. Beyond its temples, the town has become nationally known for its distinctive filter coffee, considered by many South Indian coffee enthusiasts among the finest produced anywhere in the region.
As part of the wider Thanjavur-Kumbakonam Chola heritage region, the town offers visitors a chance to explore significant temple architecture away from the more heavily visited Thanjavur itself, with several notable Chola and later Nayak-era structures scattered throughout the town and surrounding area.
Kumbakonam's Mahamaham festival, held once every twelve years, is considered by tradition to bring the combined sanctity of India's nine most sacred rivers to the town's central tank, drawing enormous pilgrim crowds during this rare occurrence.
