Bum La Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass located in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh on the India–China border. Situated at an elevation of around 15,200 feet (4,633 metres) above sea level, it is one of the most significant and scenic border passes in India. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, pristine lakes, and rugged Himalayan landscapes, Bum La is known for its breathtaking beauty and strategic importance. The pass is a popular destination for adventure travellers visiting Tawang and offers stunning views of the Himalayan terrain. Due to its sensitive border location, visitors require special permits from the authorities to access the area.
Bum La Pass has been historically important as an ancient trade route connecting Tibet and the Tawang region through the Himalayas. The pass gained major strategic significance during the 1962 Indo-China War, when it witnessed intense military action between Indian and Chinese forces. Since then, it has remained an important location for India's border security and military presence. In recent years, the pass has also become a symbol of peace and cooperation, with regular meetings between Indian and Chinese border personnel held at the Bum La Border Personnel Meeting Point.
