Gorichen Peak

Gorichen Peak is the highest mountain peak in Arunachal Pradesh and the third-highest peak in Northeast India, located in the Tawang district of the Eastern Himalayas. Rising to an elevation of around 22,500 feet (6,858 metres), the snow-covered peak is known for its majestic beauty, challenging terrain, and spiritual significance among local communities. Surrounded by glaciers, alpine landscapes, and rugged mountain ranges, Gorichen Peak is a major attraction for mountaineers, trekkers, and adventure enthusiasts. Gorichen Peak has been an important part of the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Monpa community for centuries. The mountain's name is derived from local terms, with "Gori Chen" referring to a powerful mountain guardian in regional beliefs. Due to its remote location and difficult terrain, the peak remained unexplored for many years. The first successful ascent of Gorichen Peak was achieved in 1986 by an Indian Army mountaineering expedition, marking an important milestone in Himalayan exploration. Best viewpoints are along the road near Sela Pass, about 2 hours from Tawang.
