Introduction

Tawang is a breathtaking hill town located in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, nestled in the Eastern Himalayas at an altitude of around 10,000 feet. Known for its snow-covered mountains, Buddhist monasteries, pristine lakes, and vibrant Monpa culture, Tawang is one of India's most beautiful and spiritually significant destinations. The town is famous for the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second-largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa. With attractions such as Sela Pass, Bum La Pass, Madhuri Lake, and ancient monasteries, Tawang attracts pilgrims, adventure enthusiasts, nature lovers, and travellers seeking Himalayan experiences.

History

Tawang has a rich history deeply connected with Tibetan Buddhism and the Monpa community, who have inhabited the region for centuries. The name Tawang is believed to mean "chosen by a horse", based on local legends associated with the founding of the monastery. The famous Tawang Monastery was established in 1680–1681 by Merag Lama Lodre Gyatso under the guidance of the 5th Dalai Lama, becoming an important centre of the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism. Historically, the region had cultural and religious connections with Tibet and was influenced by Tibetan traditions. Tawang gained strategic importance during the 1962 Indo-China War, when the region witnessed major military conflicts. Today, it remains a significant border town, preserving its Buddhist heritage, tribal traditions, and natural beauty while standing as one of Arunachal Pradesh's most iconic destinations.
