Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar Lake)

Madhuri Lake, also known as Sangetsar Lake, is a breathtaking high-altitude lake located in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of around 12,000 feet in the Eastern Himalayas, the lake is surrounded by snow-covered mountains and dramatic landscapes, making it one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the region. The lake is famous for its unique landscape featuring hundreds of dead tree trunks rising from its crystal-clear waters, creating a surreal and picturesque view. Originally known as Sangetsar Lake, it gained popularity after being featured in the Bollywood film Koyla and was later popularly named Madhuri Lake after actress Madhuri Dixit. It is a major attraction for tourists visiting Tawang and Bum La Pass.

Sangetsar Lake was formed naturally after a powerful earthquake in 1950, which caused changes in the landscape and created a depression that later filled with water. The lake holds cultural significance for the local Monpa community, who consider the surrounding region spiritually important. The original name, Sangetsar, comes from a nearby village that was submerged during the earthquake, leaving behind the distinctive tree trunks visible in the lake today. The lake gained national recognition after the shooting of the film Koyla in the 1990s, which brought increased tourism to the area. Today, Madhuri Lake remains a symbol of Arunachal Pradesh's untouched natural beauty and is one of the most visited destinations around Tawang.
