Introduction

Chhatbir Zoo, formally the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, is Punjab's largest zoo, located just outside Chandigarh and home to tigers, lions, elephants and a wide range of native and exotic species set within a spacious, forested landscape. A miniature train loops through parts of the zoo, and a large lion and tiger safari section allows visitors to view big cats from vehicles rather than through conventional enclosures.

As the primary zoo serving the entire Chandigarh tri-city population, it draws large numbers of family visitors, particularly on weekends and public holidays, making weekday visits generally a quieter and more comfortable option.

History

Established in 1977 and named after former Punjab Chief Minister Mahendra Chaudhary, the zoo has expanded significantly over the decades to include large safari-style enclosures alongside its original traditional zoo layout.

Best time to visit

October to March; closed on Mondays.

How to reach

About 18km from Chandigarh, on the road toward Patiala.
