Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden in Sector 31 brings a quieter, more meditative aesthetic to Chandigarh's collection of themed public gardens, laid out with the curved paths, still ponds and carefully placed rock formations characteristic of traditional Japanese garden design. A wooden bridge crossing a small lake is a particular highlight, offering a calm spot to pause within the wider, more geometrically planned city around it.

Compared to the city's larger, more crowded gardens like the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden tends to be a quieter retreat, popular for its more contemplative atmosphere rather than as a major festival or event venue.

Developed as part of Chandigarh's broader mid-20th-century programme of themed public gardens, intended to give residents of the planned city a variety of distinct green spaces reflecting different design traditions.
