Dawki is a scenic border town located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, famous for the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. Dawki has historically been an important trading and cultural centre due to its location along the India–Bangladesh border. The region has traditionally been inhabited by the Khasi and Jaintia communities, who have preserved their unique customs, traditions, and village systems for centuries. During British rule, Dawki developed as a border trading post connecting the Khasi Hills with the plains of present-day Bangladesh. The construction of the Dawki Bridge over the Umngot River in the 1930s further increased its importance as a transportation link. After India's independence and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, Dawki continued to serve as an important border trade point. Today, it is celebrated not only for its historical significance but also as one of Meghalaya's most visited natural attractions.
