Dholavira

Dholavira is one of the most significant excavated sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island within the Great Rann of Kutch, revealing sophisticated urban planning including an advanced water conservation and storage system dating back over 4,000 years. The excavated ruins include distinct upper and lower town divisions, wide ceremonial grounds and evidence of a system of large reservoirs engineered to manage the region's scarce water resources.

Far less visited than better-known Indus Valley sites due to its remote desert location, Dholavira rewards the effort of reaching it with a genuine sense of standing among one of the world's earliest and most sophisticated urban civilisations, largely without other visitors sharing the experience.

Excavated beginning in the 1960s and continuing over subsequent decades, Dholavira flourished as a major Harappan-era trading centre from around 3000 to 1500 BCE, its scale and sophistication ranking it among the most important Indus Valley sites yet discovered.
