Bhuj, the historic capital of the former princely state of Kutch, blends surviving palace architecture with a devastating modern history — much of the old city was destroyed in the catastrophic 2001 Gujarat earthquake, and the town's rebuilding since has created an unusual mix of restored heritage and newer construction. The surviving Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal palaces offer a glimpse of Kutch's princely past, while the town serves as the natural gateway for exploring the wider Rann of Kutch and the region's renowned handicraft villages.
Bhuj's surrounding villages are particularly known for embroidery, block printing and other traditional Kutchi crafts, making the town a popular base for craft-focused shopping alongside its role as the starting point for Rann of Kutch excursions.
As the historic seat of the Jadeja dynasty that ruled Kutch for centuries, Bhuj's heritage architecture reflects that princely history, though the 2001 earthquake caused extensive damage to much of the old city, prompting a significant, still-ongoing process of restoration and rebuilding.
