Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh is one of the most important cities in Assam and is popularly known as the "Tea City of India" because of its vast tea gardens and major role in the country's tea industry. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Upper Assam, Dibrugarh is a centre of trade, education, culture, and tourism. The city is surrounded by lush green tea estates, forests, and rivers, offering attractions such as Dehing Patkai National Park, Jokai Botanical Garden, and nearby river islands. With its blend of natural beauty, Assamese traditions, and colonial-era heritage, Dibrugarh serves as an important gateway to eastern Assam and the neighbouring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Dibrugarh has a long history connected with the Ahom Kingdom, which ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. The name Dibrugarh is believed to have originated from the Ahom-era military camp called Dibrumukh or Dibrugarh, meaning a strategic fort by the river. During British rule, the city gained importance after the discovery of tea-growing potential in Assam in the 19th century. The establishment of tea plantations, oil exploration, and trade centres transformed Dibrugarh into a major economic hub. The city also became significant with the development of railways, river transport, and administrative institutions. Today, Dibrugarh continues to be a leading centre for Assam's tea industry, education, healthcare, and cultural activities while preserving its rich historical identity.
