Introduction

Sivasagar is a historic city in Assam and one of the most important cultural destinations of Northeast India. Located about 360 kilometres from Guwahati, the city is famous for its magnificent Ahom-era monuments, temples, palaces, and large water bodies. Once the capital of the powerful Ahom Kingdom, Sivasagar preserves the rich heritage, architecture, and traditions of a dynasty that ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. The city is known for landmarks such as Sivasagar Sivadol, Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, and Kareng Ghar, making it a major attraction for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and travellers.

History

Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from the 17th to the early 19th century and was earlier known as Rangpur. The Ahoms established a strong administrative, cultural, and military centre here, leaving behind remarkable architectural achievements. During the reign of Ahom kings such as Swargadeo Rudra Singha and Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha, several grand structures, temples, and royal complexes were built, including the famous Sivasagar Sivadol, one of India's tallest Shiva temples. The city played a major role in Assam's political and cultural development until the British annexation of Assam in 1826. Today, Sivasagar stands as a living museum of Ahom history, preserving ancient monuments, traditions, and the glorious legacy of Assam's longest-ruling dynasty.
