Introduction

Dong Village is a remote and picturesque village located in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, near the India–China border. Famous as the "First Sunrise Point of India," Dong is one of the earliest places in the country to receive the first rays of the sun due to its easternmost geographical location. Situated between the Lohit and Sati valleys at an altitude of around 1,240 metres, the village offers breathtaking views of mountains, rivers, and lush green landscapes. Home to the Mishmi tribal community, Dong provides visitors with a unique experience of indigenous culture, traditional lifestyles, and untouched Himalayan beauty.

History

Dong Village has a long history connected with the Mishmi tribes, who have inhabited the eastern Himalayan region for generations. The community has preserved its traditional customs, indigenous knowledge, and close relationship with nature. Due to its remote location near the international border, Dong remained relatively isolated for many years. The village gained national attention in the early 2000s after geographical studies identified it as one of the first inhabited places in India to witness sunrise. This recognition brought increased interest from travellers and researchers. Over time, limited tourism development and improved connectivity have allowed visitors to explore Dong while maintaining its natural environment and traditional tribal heritage. Today, Dong Village represents the unique geography, culture, and unexplored beauty of eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
