Gulmarg

Gulmarg is one of India's most beautiful hill stations and premier ski destinations, located in the Baramulla district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas at an elevation of around 2,650 metres (8,694 feet), Gulmarg is renowned for its lush green meadows, snow-covered mountains, alpine forests, and breathtaking landscapes. Often called the "Meadow of Flowers," it transforms into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers during summer and a world-class skiing destination in winter. The history of Gulmarg dates back centuries and is closely associated with the rulers of Kashmir. Originally known as Gaurimarg, meaning "Meadow of Gauri," the area was renamed Gulmarg ("Meadow of Flowers") in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak, who was captivated by its abundant wildflowers and natural beauty. During the Mughal era, emperors such as Jahangir frequently visited Gulmarg and admired its scenic landscapes, reportedly collecting numerous varieties of flowers from the meadows. In the 19th century, the British developed Gulmarg as a popular summer retreat and established recreational facilities, including golf courses and holiday cottages. Following India's independence, Gulmarg emerged as one of the country's leading adventure tourism destinations, with skiing, snowboarding, trekking, and the construction of the Gulmarg Gondola further enhancing its global reputation. Today, Gulmarg is celebrated for its natural beauty, adventure sports, and rich Himalayan heritage.
