Introduction

Jaisalmer is a historic desert city in western Rajasthan, famous for its golden sandstone architecture, magnificent forts, ornate havelis and vast Thar Desert landscapes. Often called the “Golden City of India,” the city glows in warm golden hues, especially around sunrise and sunset.

Jaisalmer is known for attractions such as Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, Gadisar Lake and the nearby Sam Sand Dunes. Its rich Rajasthani culture, traditional music, desert safaris and distinctive architecture make it one of India's most popular heritage and desert destinations.

History

Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 CE by Rawal Jaisal, a Rajput ruler of the Bhati dynasty. He established the city around the massive hilltop fort that became the centre of the kingdom. Its strategic location along important ancient trade routes connecting India with Central Asia and the Middle East helped Jaisalmer prosper as a centre of commerce.

For centuries, merchants and traders passing through the Thar Desert contributed to the city's wealth, leading to the construction of elaborate havelis, temples and mansions. Although the importance of the old trade routes declined during the colonial period, Jaisalmer's historic architecture and desert culture remain remarkably well preserved.

Best time to visit
