Kabini, on the edge of Nagarhole National Park, has become one of South India's most celebrated wildlife destinations, its backwater reservoir and surrounding forest offering exceptionally reliable elephant and tiger sightings, particularly from boat safaris along the water's edge during the dry season. Luxury and mid-range wildlife resorts along the reservoir have made Kabini one of the more comfortable bases for extended safari stays in the region.
The 'Kabini elephant gathering', when large herds congregate along the reservoir's grassy banks during the driest months, has become one of Indian wildlife tourism's most photographed seasonal phenomena, drawing dedicated wildlife photographers from across the world during peak dry-season months.
The Kabini reservoir was created by a dam built in the 1970s, and the resulting backwater habitat has since developed into one of the region's most significant wildlife concentration points, particularly valued for its elephant population.
