Introduction

Nuranang Falls, also known as Jang Falls, is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Arunachal Pradesh, located near Jang village in the Tawang district. Falling from a height of around 100 metres, the waterfall is surrounded by lush green forests, rocky mountains, and the breathtaking landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas. The powerful cascade of water flowing through the Nuranang River creates a stunning natural spectacle, making it a popular destination for photographers, nature lovers, and travellers visiting Tawang. The waterfall gained wider recognition after being featured in the Bollywood movie Tanhai Tanhai from the film Taal.

History

Nuranang Falls has long been part of the natural landscape of the Monpa-inhabited Himalayan region and holds local cultural importance. The waterfall is named after Nura, a local woman who is believed to have helped Indian soldiers during the 1962 Indo-China War. According to local accounts, she assisted a soldier named Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat during the Battle of Nuranang, and the area later became associated with their story of bravery. The region gained strategic importance during the war due to its location along the route connecting Tawang and the border areas. Today, Nuranang Falls is not only a natural attraction but also a reminder of the region's history, courage, and connection with local legends.
