Medak Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia, is a striking Gothic Revival structure built by British missionaries, its soaring interior and elaborate stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes reflecting the significant Christian missionary presence established in this part of the Deccan during the colonial period. The cathedral remains an active place of worship, its scale and architectural detail giving it particular significance among Telangana's religious heritage sites, distinct from the state's more numerous Hindu and Islamic monuments.
The cathedral's construction was reportedly undertaken partly as famine relief work, employing local labourers during a period of severe regional hardship, adding a layer of humanitarian history to its architectural and religious significance.
Built between 1914 and 1924 under the direction of Reverend Charles Walker Posnett, Medak Cathedral's construction is said to have been motivated partly by a desire to provide employment during a regional famine, giving the building's origin a specific humanitarian dimension alongside its religious purpose.
