Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort, perched on the Aravalli hills overlooking Jaipur, was built as part of the city's defensive ring alongside Amer and Jaigarh forts, and today offers one of the best panoramic viewpoints over the Pink City below, particularly striking at sunset. The fort's Madhavendra Bhawan, a complex of nearly identical suites built for the maharaja's queens, reflects a distinctive approach to royal residential architecture within a defensive fortification.

Nahargarh's popularity as a sunset viewpoint has made it one of Jaipur's most visited fort sites, and its position within a relatively short drive of the city centre makes it an easy addition to a day exploring Jaipur's broader heritage circuit.

Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, as part of the city's defensive fortification system. The fort was originally known as Sudarshangarh, but was later called Nahargarh. According to local tradition, the name is associated with Nahar Singh Bhomia, whose spirit was believed to have interfered with the construction until measures were taken to appease him.

The fort was expanded and renovated by later rulers of Jaipur. Madhavendra Bhawan, constructed during the reign of Sawai Madho Singh II in the late 19th century, added a more elaborate residential and royal character to the fort. Nahargarh also played a role in protecting Jaipur during periods of conflict and became a retreat for the royal family.

By Air: Jaipur International Airport is approximately 25 km from Nahargarh Fort. Taxis and app-based cabs are convenient options.

By Train: Jaipur Junction Railway Station is around 15 km from the fort. From the station, taxis and local transport can be used to reach the hill.

By Road: Nahargarh Fort is accessible from Jaipur by road through the Aravalli Hills. Taxis, private vehicles and local tour vehicles are commonly used to reach the fort. The journey from central Jaipur generally takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.
