Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, on a set of small river islands in the Kaveri near Mysuru, is one of South India's most easily accessible and rewarding bird sanctuaries, its boat safaris offering close views of nesting painted storks, herons, egrets and other waterbirds during the breeding season. The sanctuary's compact scale means a visit can typically be completed within an hour or two, making it an easy add-on to a wider Mysuru itinerary.
Alongside the resident and migratory bird population, marsh crocodiles are commonly seen basking on the riverbanks during boat rides, adding an additional wildlife dimension to what is primarily valued as one of Karnataka's premier birdwatching destinations.
Established as a bird sanctuary in 1940 at the initiative of ornithologist Salim Ali, Ranganathittu has remained one of India's most significant riverine bird breeding sites, particularly for painted storks and other large waterbirds.
June to November, for peak nesting and breeding season.
