Tezpur

Tezpur is a historic city in Assam, located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River and often called the "Cultural Capital of Assam." Tezpur has a history dating back to ancient times and is mentioned in Hindu mythology as the kingdom of King Bana, a legendary ruler and devotee of Lord Shiva. The name Tezpur comes from the Sanskrit words Teza (blood) and Pura (town), linked to the mythical battle between Lord Krishna and King Bana. Historically, the region was part of the ancient Kamarupa Kingdom and later came under the influence of various dynasties, including the Ahoms. During British rule, Tezpur developed as an important administrative and cultural centre of Assam. The city also played a role in India's freedom movement, with local leaders participating in the struggle for independence. Tezpur has its own airport (Salonibari); also well connected by road from Guwahati, about 4 hours away.
