Nameri National Park

Nameri National Park is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary located in the Sonitpur district of Assam, along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. Known for its scenic forests, rivers, and rich biodiversity, the park is part of the Nameri Tiger Reserve and is a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure enthusiasts. The park is famous for the Jia Bhoroli River, which flows through its landscape and offers opportunities for river rafting and angling. It is home to diverse wildlife including Bengal tigers, elephants, leopards, gaurs, wild boars, deer, Himalayan black bears, and rare bird species such as the white-winged wood duck. With its peaceful environment, dense forests, and mountain views, Nameri is one of Assam's most attractive eco-tourism destinations.

The forests of Nameri have traditionally been part of the larger Himalayan forest ecosystem and have supported diverse wildlife and indigenous communities for centuries. The area was initially protected as Nameri Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985 to conserve its rich flora and fauna. It was later upgraded to Nameri National Park in 1998 and became part of the Nameri Tiger Reserve in 1999 under India's tiger conservation programme. The park has played an important role in protecting endangered species, especially elephants, tigers, and the rare white-winged wood duck. Over the years, conservation initiatives, habitat protection, and eco-tourism efforts have helped preserve Nameri's unique biodiversity, making it an important natural heritage site of Assam.
