Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a stunning high-altitude glacial lake located in the East Sikkim district of Sikkim. Situated at an elevation of around 12,400 feet (3,780 metres) on the way to Nathula Pass, the lake is surrounded by snow-covered mountains and alpine landscapes. The crystal-clear waters of Tsomgo Lake change colours with the seasons, making it one of Sikkim's most beautiful natural attractions. Considered sacred by the local Sikkimese Buddhist and Hindu communities, the lake holds spiritual importance and attracts thousands of visitors for its scenic beauty, yak rides, and peaceful Himalayan environment.
Tsomgo Lake was formed naturally by the melting of glaciers and has been an important part of the cultural and spiritual traditions of the people of Sikkim for centuries. The name Tsomgo comes from the Bhutia language, where "Tso" means lake and "Mgo" means head/source, referring to the lake's significance as a water source. Local communities have long respected the lake as a sacred place, and Buddhist monks historically used changes in the lake's appearance as a form of spiritual interpretation. Due to its location near the sensitive India–China border, the region has also held strategic importance for the Indian military. Today, Tsomgo Lake is one of Sikkim's most visited destinations, representing the natural beauty, cultural traditions, and Himalayan heritage of the state.
