Introduction

Victoria Memorial is a grand historical monument located in Kolkata, West Bengal, dedicated to Queen Victoria, the former Empress of India. Built with white Makrana marble, the monument is a magnificent example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, combining British, Mughal, and European design elements. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, fountains, and reflecting pools, Victoria Memorial houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and historical artefacts related to India's colonial period. Today, it serves as a museum and one of Kolkata's most iconic heritage landmarks.

History

Victoria Memorial was conceived after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 as a tribute to her reign and the British Empire's presence in India. The foundation stone was laid in 1906 by King George V, and the monument was officially opened to the public in 1921. The project was initiated by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, who envisioned creating a grand memorial similar to European monuments. Designed by British architect William Emerson, the structure was built using white marble brought from Makrana in Rajasthan, the same source of marble used for the Taj Mahal. The construction was funded through contributions from British officials, Indian princes, and the public. After India's independence, the memorial was transformed into a museum showcasing India's history, art, and colonial-era collections. Today, Victoria Memorial remains one of West Bengal's most visited attractions and a symbol of Kolkata's architectural and cultural heritage.
