Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, spread across roughly 195 square kilometres of the Dalma hill range near Jamshedpur, is best known as elephant country — sightings and encounters with the sanctuary's resident elephant population are enough of a local fact of life that they carry their own nickname, 'Dalma Haathi'. Unlike many Indian wildlife reserves, Dalma is explored largely on foot along marked forest trails rather than by vehicle safari, giving visitors a closer, quieter way to experience the sal and mixed deciduous forest.
A Shiva and Hanuman shrine sits near the summit at around 926 metres, reached by a scenic uphill drive through the forest, and the Makulakocha forest post partway up includes a small interpretation centre and deer enclosure. The sanctuary overlooks the Subarnarekha River and sits close enough to Jamshedpur to work as an easy day trip from the steel city.
Inaugurated in 1975, Dalma has since become one of eastern India's better-known elephant sanctuaries, its forests having long served as habitat and migratory corridor for elephant herds moving between Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
November to March; the sanctuary is typically closed to visitors during the monsoon breeding season.
