Yuksom

Yuksom, Sikkim's first capital, is where the kingdom's first Chogyal (king) was consecrated in 1642, giving the small village profound historical significance within Sikkimese identity despite its modest present-day scale. The Norbugang Chorten and coronation throne mark this historic site, and Yuksom's position as the traditional starting point for treks toward Kanchenjunga Base Camp and Dzongri gives it additional significance as a trekking gateway.

The village's relatively unspoiled, quiet atmosphere, combined with its deep historical roots, gives Yuksom a character distinct from Sikkim's more actively touristed towns, appealing both to history-focused visitors and to trekkers preparing for multi-day expeditions into the surrounding high mountains.

Yuksom served as Sikkim's first capital following the 1642 consecration of Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal, an event considered foundational to the Sikkimese kingdom's history, before the capital later relocated to Rabdentse and eventually Gangtok.
