Alibaug, on the Konkan coast a short ferry ride from Mumbai, has developed into one of the city's most popular weekend beach getaways, its combination of beaches, an old sea fort and a growing number of boutique resorts giving it a more accessible, relaxed coastal escape than travelling further down the Konkan coast. Kolaba Fort, reachable on foot across the sand at low tide, adds a heritage stop alongside the town's primarily beach-focused appeal.
Alibaug's proximity to Mumbai — a scenic ferry crossing followed by a short road journey — has made it particularly popular for short weekend trips, and the wider area's growing food and boutique hospitality scene has given it a reputation as a more curated, design-conscious alternative to some of Maharashtra's more traditional beach towns.
Alibaug developed historically as a coastal town under Maratha naval commander Kanhoji Angre, whose fleet used the area's forts, including Kolaba, to control this stretch of the Konkan coastline against European colonial naval powers.
