Gateway of India is one of India's most iconic historical monuments, located on the waterfront of Apollo Bunder in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Built during the British colonial era, the monument overlooks the Arabian Sea and represents Mumbai's rich maritime history and architectural heritage. Constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, the Gateway of India features a grand basalt arch and has become a symbol of the city. The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911, which was the first visit by a British monarch to the country. The foundation stone was laid on 2 December 1911, but the final construction was completed in 1924 due to delays in obtaining materials and completing the design. The monument was designed by architect George Wittet, who combined elements of Hindu, Islamic, and European architectural styles to create the Indo-Saracenic design. The Gateway later gained historical importance as the place from where the last British troops left India after independence in 1948, marking the end of British rule. Today, the Gateway of India stands as a symbol of Mumbai's colonial past, independence history, and cultural identity.
