Arambol, at Goa's northernmost stretch of coast, retains a strong bohemian, alternative-lifestyle character even as tourism has grown, with a long-established community of yoga practitioners, musicians and long-term travellers giving it a distinct identity from the more mainstream beaches further south. A freshwater lake near the beach, fed partly by natural sulphur springs locally believed to have therapeutic properties, adds an unusual additional attraction.
Nightly drum circles on the beach, a tradition dating back decades, remain one of Arambol's most recognisable features, drawing both participants and onlookers as the sun sets over the sea — a lower-key, more communal version of the party scene found elsewhere in Goa.
Arambol developed alongside Anjuna and Vagator as part of Goa's original hippie trail destinations from the 1960s and 70s, and has retained more of that original counterculture identity than most other Goan beaches given its more remote northern location.
