Anjuna is legendary as the birthplace of Goa's trance music scene and hippie counterculture, its rocky coves and laid-back atmosphere having drawn free spirits since the 1960s. The famous Wednesday flea market, a sprawling bazaar of clothing, jewellery, souvenirs and street food, remains one of Goa's most iconic weekly events, drawing both tourists and long-term Goa residents alike.
While Anjuna has become considerably more commercialised over the decades, it retains more of its original bohemian character than the busier beaches further south, with a continuing scene of yoga retreats, beach parties and alternative-lifestyle cafes that trace a direct line back to its counterculture origins.
Anjuna's reputation as a hippie haven took shape in the late 1960s and 70s, when travellers on the overland 'hippie trail' from Europe settled here, laying the groundwork for the trance music and alternative lifestyle culture the beach remains associated with today.
November to February; the Wednesday flea market is a particular highlight worth timing a visit around.
