The coastal region around Baga was traditionally a fishing area inhabited by local Goan communities who depended on the Arabian Sea for their livelihood. Like much of Goa, the area was influenced by Portuguese rule for over four centuries, which shaped the region's culture, architecture, and traditions. After Goa became part of India in 1961, tourism gradually expanded along the northern coastline. During the late 20th century, Baga developed from a quiet fishing village into a major tourist destination, with the growth of beach tourism, water sports, and hospitality businesses. Today, Baga Beach represents the modern tourism identity of Goa while retaining elements of its traditional coastal heritage.
