Chapora Fort sits on a headland above Vagator beach, its laterite walls now largely in ruins but still offering some of the most sweeping coastal views in North Goa, taking in the Chapora river mouth and the Arabian Sea beyond. The fort gained additional popular recognition after featuring prominently in the Bollywood film 'Dil Chahta Hai', which has since drawn a steady stream of visitors specifically for that connection.
Sunset is by far the most popular time to visit, when the fort's elevated position and open ruins fill with visitors watching the sky change colour over the sea — arriving with enough time to explore before the crowds gather is worthwhile for a quieter look at the ruins themselves.
Built by the Portuguese in 1717 on the site of an earlier Adil Shahi fortification, Chapora Fort served as a strategic defensive point guarding the mouth of the Chapora river against rival colonial and regional powers.
