Morjim, sometimes nicknamed 'Little Russia' for its significant Russian-speaking tourist and expatriate community, is also one of Goa's most important nesting sites for endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles, with protected nesting zones marked off along parts of the beach during breeding season. The combination of a distinct international community atmosphere and genuine conservation significance gives Morjim a character quite different from Goa's more homogenous tourist beaches.
Yoga studios, Russian-language signage and a generally quieter, more residential feel distinguish Morjim from the busier beaches to its south, appealing to longer-stay visitors and those specifically drawn by the turtle conservation programme active on parts of the shore.
Morjim's development as a specifically Russian-favoured destination grew through the 2000s and 2010s, alongside its established role — recognised earlier — as a key Olive Ridley turtle nesting beach protected under Goa Forest Department conservation programmes.
