Butterfly Beach is a small, secluded cove near Palolem, accessible only by boat or a fairly demanding forest trek, its isolation having kept it free of the shacks and infrastructure found at Goa's more developed beaches. The beach takes its name from the butterflies once commonly seen along the surrounding forested cliffs, though sightings have become less frequent as the beach has grown more popular.
Boat trips from Palolem to Butterfly Beach are typically combined with dolphin-spotting excursions in the surrounding waters, and while the beach draws more visitors than its name might suggest, its lack of any permanent development still gives it a noticeably wilder feel than Goa's mainstream beach resorts.
Long known only to local fishing communities given its difficult access, Butterfly Beach has gained wider recognition in recent years as boat tour operators from Palolem began including it as a regular stop.
