Palolem is widely considered one of Goa's most beautiful beaches, a gently curving, palm-fringed crescent of sand in the south of the state, calmer and less developed than the busier resorts further north. Rows of wooden beach huts along the treeline give Palolem a distinctly laid-back, semi-rustic character that has made it a favourite for longer, slower stays.
The bay's calm, shallow water makes it one of the safer Goan beaches for swimming, and kayak trips to spot dolphins in the surrounding waters, along with the quieter Butterfly Beach nearby, are popular half-day excursions from Palolem for those wanting to explore beyond the main stretch of sand.
South Goa's beaches, including Palolem, developed tourism infrastructure considerably later than the north, helping preserve a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere that continues to distinguish the region from Goa's busier northern coastline.
