Calangute is Goa's largest and busiest beach, often called the 'Queen of Beaches', a wide stretch of sand backed by a dense strip of shacks, water sports operators and hotels catering to the state's largest volume of domestic and international tourists. Its scale and infrastructure make it the default starting point for many first-time visitors to North Goa.
Parasailing, jet skiing and banana boat rides are all readily available along the shore, and the beach's central location puts it within easy reach of neighbouring Baga and Candolim, meaning many visitors base themselves here and explore the wider North Goa coastline from a single stay. Evenings bring a lively mix of beachside dining and the general buzz that has made Calangute synonymous with Goa's mainstream tourist scene.
Calangute's transformation from a quiet fishing village into Goa's most developed beach resort area began in earnest during the hippie era of the 1960s and 70s, and has continued at pace through subsequent decades of mass tourism development.
