Candolim offers a somewhat calmer alternative to neighbouring Calangute and Baga, a long stretch of sand popular with families and older visitors seeking a slightly quieter beach experience without sacrificing easy access to restaurants and nightlife. The rusting wreck of the cargo ship River Princess, visible offshore for many years before its eventual removal, was for a long time one of the beach's more distinctive landmarks.
A well-developed strip of restaurants, boutique shops and mid-range hotels runs parallel to the beach, giving Candolim a slightly more upmarket, settled character compared to the more raucous scenes found further along the coast at Baga.
Like much of North Goa's coastline, Candolim developed steadily through the tourism boom of recent decades, gradually shifting from a quiet fishing beach into one of the region's more established mid-range resort areas.
