Chail, a former summer capital of the princely state of Patiala, is known for having the world's highest cricket ground, built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh at over 2,100 metres, alongside a palace-turned-heritage-hotel set amid dense cedar forest. The town's quieter, less developed character compared to nearby Shimla gives it a genuinely relaxed atmosphere, appealing to visitors wanting forest walks and heritage architecture without heavy crowds.
A small wildlife sanctuary near the town protects Himalayan species including the goral and pheasants, adding a nature-focused element to a visit otherwise centred on the town's royal architectural legacy and forested surroundings.
Developed by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in the early 20th century after a reported falling-out with British authorities in Shimla, Chail became his alternative summer retreat, complete with the distinctive high-altitude cricket ground.
