Kasauli is one of Himachal's smallest and quietest colonial-era hill stations, its compact scale and strict development restrictions having kept it noticeably less commercialised than Shimla or Manali. Established by the British in the 1840s as a military cantonment and hill retreat, Kasauli has retained much of its original small-town colonial character owing to sustained restrictions on large-scale development within the cantonment area.
