Given the significant altitude, visitors typically spend only a limited time at the lake itself due to the genuine physical demands of the thin air, and proper acclimatisation in Lachen beforehand is strongly advised before attempting the journey to this remote, high-altitude site.
History
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak visited Gurudongmar Lake during his travels through the Himalaya, and the lake's portion nearest his blessing is said to remain unfrozen even in the depths of winter, a detail that has become part of the site's enduring religious significance.
